Common Mistakes Web Developers Must Avoid

The first time I designed a website it was in my teens. That was surely a playful attempt and my first tryst with the world web wide. As soon as I considered stepping into the world of website designing as a web developer I had to put in much more seriousness into the work. My first endeavor as a web developer in the professional world, sadly but fortunately proved to be a disaster. ‘Sadly’—because my initial effort was a failure, ‘fortunately’ since I got a chance to learn about the silly flaws I had made. Web developers, especially starters, even today make similar mistakes while developing a website. During my long tenure in the field, I got a chance to work on numerous other projects and made a list of some of the usual mistakes done by a developer.

A common mistake that a web designer may commit is not to build a user-friendly navigation system. Poor navigation will simply confuse a visitor and cause irritation, forcing him/ her to leave the site. If your menu is quite confusing, your visitors will stick to one page and may soon leave the website without giving a further look at the other pages. While you plan to design a site, make sure to keep it simple and easily navigable, something that even a 10-year-old child is able to understand easily. A smooth navigation system will encourage your visitor to peep into other pages.

Too many flashy graphics, animation, clunky banners, a huge line of links and videos slow down the loading process of your web page. This is highly irritating at the visitors’ end and it might push them to leave the site. Make sure you have done all that is required to speed up the loading process.

Color schemes create a direct impact on visitors. Avoid using very bright colored backgrounds. Black text is considered to the best among all the colors. While designing a website on babies for instance, you may use soft colors, such as baby pink and light blue, while in case of a formal apparel website beige would be suitable. Along with the design, the layout matters as well. So, ensure that the overall layout is precise, crisp, and clear. Your design must not lose focus. Make sure it stresses on the core aspects of the website.

The bottom line is that you are designing a website to assist people, so abstain from confusing them as much as possible.
