Website Designing for Law Firms

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Do you have any idea how a lawyer’s website looks like? Lawyers are into serious business and their websites reflect the kind of service they offer. I was once unfortunate enough to look for a top-class lawyer in Canada (due to some personal reasons of course), and scanned through several law firm websites on the Net. Even though I eventually selected one, all the while, I noticed some general design patterns followed by lawyers across Toronto, and perhaps all over the globe.

My lawyer helped me through the legal battle, and was successful in rescuing me. Yet, I do not recall it as a ‘memorable’ event in my life. Now, what had made me select Ben (my lawyer), was the unique concept of his website. Even as a designer, I was absolutely thrilled by the website’s unique design, which was instrumental in making me hire thes services. The website had simple designs. However, the key focus was on the sector they specialize in and some of their real success stories in the prominent areas of the web page with the help of graphics.

The website was designed by a skilled web designer in Toronto, and the exclusive concept left me baffled. Since, I had never worked on a law firm website; I took additional interest and studied the website in detail.

Some of the noticeable patterns common to all law firm websites:

Graphics – The website displayed minimal use of flashy graphics, pictures and other stunning illustration in all its web pages.

Simple Interface – Almost every website follows a simple interface, since complex ones tend to confuse web visitors and subsequently force them to leave the website. A simple interface allows a visitor to easily navigate through the entire website and find relevant information.

Subtle Colors – The selection of colors is a significant aspect while giving shape to the website (in terms of design). Most of the websites I happened to visit focused on using light shades, such as beige, while and gray, dull shades of blue and brown, etc. Ensure that the color goes well with the profile of the law firm and the professionals representing it.

Flashy Template – A flashy template is a big ‘NO’ from all aspects. To represent the seriousness of the business they are involved in, a sober display is required.

Web Site Design Mistakes to Avoid

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Web site design is the core formula for your web site to succeed – both for search engine rankings as well as for diverting targeted traffic. Like a typical user, while searching the web for information, I do not usually visit beyond the third page of the search engine lists. Only some sites are able to allure me into visiting them. Being a busy professional time is a luxury I cannot afford to waste, even while surfing the web for information. Precise and quick is the key.

On my experience as a user, I would list some of the mistakes that web developers make with their web site design sections that result in bad management for their sites.

Complex Search – Users generally want to find their information before they proceed to navigate the entire site. Therefore, your search engine tool should be precise and be able to overcome typo and related errors.

PDF File – A user will avoid downloading and reading a PDF file for information. So, avoid implementing them in your web site design.

Non-Formatted Text – Users do not prefer amounts of data they cannot scan and interpret. PDF files or vast amounts of data with same font ‘size’ and ‘color’ should be avoided. Using formatting tricks and techniques is the best way to avoid such blunders. Change the color of used links to avoid confusion for the user.

The ‘Advertisement’ Look – You have to admit that custom online advertisements have become a repulsion of sorts for web users – courtesy Spam and junk mails. Avoid designing your web site in a way that has flashing text, banner heads or excessive animation usage so that they won’t mistake your website for another aggressive ‘marketing-oriented’ site.

Unnecessary New Browser Windows – Cluttering up the user’s screen by opening up new browser windows is a technique applied by many but is a failure in itself. Users feel offended and confused and are deprived of the easy way back to the original site – the ‘Back’ button.

No Feedback – Web sites that fail to provide feedback (such as quotes and instructions) to an interested user are the final verdict of failure in web site design. Feedback is the tool that retains a visitor, and non-existence of it may mean closed doors for your site to the prospective visitor.

Web Design Services

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

When I had my web site designed by a professional team of designers and developers, I rejected it without even going beyond the first page. The team had made it hugely interactive and a den of graphic superiority, but had ignored what technically unaware people (read users) would not miss. The color combination and overall organization of the front page of the site was a let down.

Now you shall argue that judging any book by the cover is not correct. But in a virtual world that has millions of such ‘books’ within access of the user with just a click, it needs a special front page or cover to allure the user into picking a ‘book’ up and reading through it. When was the last time you had visited a site with dull and drab information and a mass of textual explanations? Not after your graduation, I guess! Neither have any of your targeted users you intend to mark as your consumer base. Web design services have to be specific regarding this to achieve success.

So, what is the next step you take to spice up your site’s magnetism?

First and Foremost, Organize!
Simple as it seems, while initiating the organization of your site, you shall find the opposite to be true. Organizing your content, all the while optimizing the same for search engines is a Herculean task.

Your first hurdle is to overcome under-usage of relevant content. The best way around this is to organize your content into categories. And make that in descending order to gradually converge on a precise point. As an example, list Guns as a category. Thereafter list Revolvers, and then under it the name the Colt series. This allows your users to navigate easily to their area of interest, and therefore, stay on as prospective customers rather than irregular ones.

Color Your Site Correct!

Formatting and coloring your site’s content in an eyeball-grabbing way is the most important task of any web design service you have registered with. Color combination is one of the basic tools that help your site to stand out from the crowd.

To do so, first identify your target customer base – youth, office-workers, women, etc, all that you can identify with, what you are trying to cater through your site. Have your web design services provider color your front page in a way that it can attract the target base. For example, use bright colors for young customers while calmer and deeper ones for the executive grade.

Finally, design your site as creative and uncanny as you can, so that the visitors stay longer than they had expected to, enhancing your chances of making a sale.
